The Athletic’s Rangers correspondent Jordan Campbell has provided a critical analysis of James Tavernier following the 1-0 defeat to Hamilton.
Steven Gerrard’s side suffered their second successive loss on Wednesday evening at Ibrox, having tasted defeat in their Scottish Cup quarter-final tie against Hearts on Saturday.
It means that Celtic are now 13 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership.
In a Q&A session following the loss, Campbell answered a number of questions from supporters, and in his response to one fan, he had some harsh words for Tavernier.
What did he say?
In response to a supporter who stated that Tavernier and Connor Goldson “don’t look interested at all”, Campbell said: “Tavernier was really poor tonight. Does look like he is struggling badly with the expectation to deliver and lead. Must be even more pressurised when Gerrard is your manager given how iconic a leader he was but that’s the reality.”
Time to change captain?
If – like Campbell states – the former Newcastle full-back truly is struggling with the pressure of being captain, is it perhaps time for a change of captain?
Gerrard has a number of experienced players at his disposal who could take the armband, such as Allan McGregor, Steven Davis and Jermain Defoe if you were to take a look at those with a number of years at the top level under their belt.
Surely, if Tavernier’s form is being affected by his status as captain, then Gerrard must reassess the situation and figure out if it is worth keeping the 28-year-old as skipper, or strip him of the captaincy in the hope of helping him rediscover his best form.

It would be a bold call from Gerrard, but if the Rangers No.2 – who is valued at £5.4m on Transfermarkt – cannot get back to his best, then it might be a conversation worth having.
